REMOTE WORK LINGO 2021

We all learned some work from home lingo last year that we’ve now been carrying over to this year, so let’s do a review so that you’re not behind on the hip terms!

Can you hear me now?

Now, I know we usually think of the Verizon commercials but this started becoming a common phrase when you weren’t sure if your audio was on or not.

You’re frozen.

We all know the feeling when you’ve been talking for 2–5 minutes and that moment when you realize you may have been frozen and no one heard what you said. You instantly wonder what face you may have frozen at and then the video/internet catches up and you hear the words — You’re frozen.

You’re on mute.

Even just re-reading this term makes me think of me trying to motion to my camera that I can’t hear the other person. We all discovered that we were improving our charades skills bit by bit last year.

Zoom Fatigue

We discovered that this in fact is a very real thing. Who knew that being on a camera all day would get so tiring? Maybe actors could have given us some tips on this. Either way, we discovered that it’s ok to figure out which meetings require face to face calls vs not.

Can you see my screen?

Screen Sharing, you love it and you hate it but boy is it a useful tool!!! We all know that you have to confirm that everyone can see your screen and that you’ve closed all your messenger/non-work related applications!

Work from home attire

Dressing from the waist up!!! But we all know the feeling of making sure that when you stand up your camera is off so that you don’t accidentally show your coworkers your favorite PJ pants.

Just ping me

How many times have you said this over the last 9 months? “Just ping me when you are ready”. “I’ll ping you when the meeting is over”.

I know… that was a lot. Looking back at all of these, I think we’ve learned how much technology has really helped adapt our new work from the home office but even technology has its kinks that impacted our day-to-day. Something I learned? Don’t sweat the small stuff, more likely than not, you’re usually not the only one having the same tech problems. It’s safe to say that most if not all of this lingo will transcend time into 2021, potentially 2022? Only time will tell but heck, let’s at least have fun with it! Let me know your favorite!
